Marketing a Small Business: Where to Start

Most small business marketing fails because it tries to do everything at once. Start with one clear message, get seen where your customers already are, and make it easy to get in touch.

Most small business marketing fails because it tries to do everything at once.

A bit of social media, a flyer once a year, a website that hasn't changed since launch, an ad that ran for a week. None of it connects, so none of it builds. Customers see a different business every time they see you.

Here's where we'd start instead. It's not complicated, and it doesn't need a big budget. It needs doing in order.

1. Say one clear thing

Before you spend anything, write one sentence that answers three questions: what you do, who it's for, and why someone should pick you.

"Fresh breakfast and proper coffee, two minutes from the station." "Same-week boiler repairs across south Derby." Clear, specific, easy to remember.

If you can't say it in a sentence, a customer won't work it out from your sign either. And once you have that sentence, every piece of marketing you do should carry it, word for word if you can. Repetition is what makes people remember you.

2. Get seen where your customers already are

For a local business, being noticed is most of the battle. People walk past shops for months without registering them.

  • Outside your door: a pavement A-board that says what you do and changes with the season.
  • At events and markets: a roller banner that goes up in a minute and makes a table look like a business.
  • Through letterboxes: a simple flyer to the streets your customers actually live in, not the whole city.
  • Online, at the basics: a Google Business Profile with the right hours, photos and phone number. It's free, and it's often the first thing people see.

You don't need all of these at once. Pick the one or two that match where your customers spend their time.

3. Make it easy to get in touch

This is where a lot of good marketing leaks away. Someone's interested, but the number is tiny, the website link is wrong, or nobody answers.

Put one clear way to contact you on everything, and make it big. Then answer quickly. When someone gets in touch, they've often contacted two or three businesses at the same time. The one that replies first tends to get the job.

4. Look the same everywhere

Your sign, your van, your cards, your flyers and your website should look like they came from the same place: same logo, same colours, same message. It sounds small. It's the difference between looking established and looking like you're winging it.

You don't need an expensive brand. You need a consistent one.

5. Keep doing it

Marketing works through repetition. One flyer drop rarely changes much. The same clear message, seen again and again in the same places, does.

So pick a rhythm you can keep up: a flyer drop every quarter, a fresh A-board message every month, a social post a week. Small and steady beats big and occasional.

6. Notice what works

Ask every new customer how they heard about you. Write it down. After a couple of months you'll know which of your efforts are pulling their weight, and you can put more into those and stop the rest.

The short version

One clear message. Seen where your customers already are. An easy way to get in touch, answered quickly. The same look everywhere, repeated steadily. Get those right and you'll be ahead of most of the businesses around you, without spending much at all.
